Hobbs Heirloom quilt wadding (quilt batting) was created at the request of Harriet Hargrave to meet the needs of quilters. It is the only unbleached cotton quilt wadding that is easy to quilt by hand or machine and can be quilted up to 4” apart. Heirloom cotton quilt wadding shrinks 3-5%, and can be preshrunk to minimize undesired shrinkage. It is very clean cotton mixed with 20% polyester, lightly needlepunched and lightly resinated. This product has more loft than the typical cotton quilt wadding, which gives more definition to the stitch than other 100% cottons.
Hobbs Heirloom black quilt wadding is the same as standard but black cotton and polyester are used to make it suitable for use with dark fabrics.
Queen size 90" x 108", 80% cotton, 20% polyester.
It is not recommended to put this wadding through a machine wash before quilting – pre-shrinking can be done by just soaking the wadding in luke-warm water in a bath or similar (without agitating), then drying flat – you can spin dry to get rid of the excess water.

I am reasonably pleased with the Hobbs Heirloom black wadding - it has served its purpose. But I think if I was buying again I would go for SewSimple Super-Soft black wadding, which I have had before. The difference is that the SewSimple wadding only needs quilting every 10", whereas the Hobbs Heirloom needs quilting every 3.5". For the sort of use I make of the wadding - that is, mostly bags of various sorts, with differing amounts of quilting, applique, embroidery etc - the option of not having to quilt closely is much better. But for anyone making conventional closely quilted quilts, I am sure the Hobbs Heirloom is perfectly satisfactory. Certainly I'm glad I tried it and have no complaints - but I shall be buying the SewSimple wadding next time.
